Steel and metal products have a wide variety of industrial, commercial and residential uses in today's world. From furniture and tools, to bolts and fasteners, people continue to find many uses for steel, but maybe none more so than for buildings. Nearly every modern structure contains at least a steel skeleton. Those that contain mostly cement will always have steel used as a reinforcing mechanism. Some of the obvious reasons to choose steel over other products when constructing a building include price, availability, flexibility and of course safety. Buildings from sheds to skyscrapers employ steel for its longevity and ability to hold off the elements. Steel can also be manufactured into easy to assemble prefab components.
A drawback to steel for buildings is the issue of weight. While other products like plastic are coming into the construction field, they cannot replace steel outright. They are either not strong enough, or do not offer the same type of protection steel offers when it comes to fires, floods, and earthquakes.

With people becoming more conscious of the environment steel buildings offer a great building material that is environmentally friendly. Steel is completely recyclable, is highly durable, and steel also requires low amounts of energy during its production cycle. With the advent of lightweight steel products, commercial uses such as automobile manufacturing and homebuilders have benefited from these new lightweight steel building material products.

Manufacturers around the world produce currently more than one billion metric tons of steel. Demand for steel continues to grow, especially among emerging nations. At present there are more than 3,500 differing grades of steel produced. They all have different chemical, environmental and physical properties.
